Part-time Pottery Studio Assistant

The position will involve working with Rebecca in a small and productive pottery workshop. You will be supporting with the hands-on practical work within pottery.

Duties may include:

  • Preparing and recycling clay
  • Throwing
  • Trimming
  • Glazing
  • Loading and unloading kilns
  • Cleaning and packaging pottery

There is a lot of repetition in pottery so it is important that you genuinely enjoy physical hands-on, repetitive processes.

Desirable Skills:

  • Practical experience of pottery – clay preparation, throwing, trimming, glazing, mixing glazes and preparing pots for sale
  • Be able to take direction well and pay attention to detail

Ideal Candidate:

  • The ideal candidate will have a passionate interest in pottery as well as wider interest in craftsmanship and design
  • You will have practical experience of the pottery making process and be excited by the production of everyday items
  • It is not essential to be amazing at repetition throwing – but it is an advantage!
  • You are easy to get on with and able to take direction well
  • You are organised, methodical and pay attention to detail
  • You are self-motivated and keen to learn more
  • You are happy to clean up after yourself and anyone else. Pottery is a messy job and cleaning continuously is an essential part of the job

Training:

Training in all aspects of the studio’s pottery production will be given.

Most of the work made in the studio will be fired in an electric kiln but there may occasionally be opportunities to get involved with other types of firing e.g. gas and wood.

Payment:

You will be paid £100 day rate for your work (inclusive)

About me:

I am a self-employed potter who regularly works on projects for high-end restaurants, retail and galleries. I also teach pottery to adults and children.

I’m interested in craftsmanship and good design in general. I aim to make items as well as possible as I believe that beautiful functional items improve everyday life.
