The doors have finally opened, both nationally and at our amazing Café and Gallery space at Ocean Studios, Real Ideas’ home of the arts in the heart of the Royal William Yard. We’re celebrating the lifting of restrictions on indoor entertainment the only way we know how – with a programme of events that shine a light on creativity and talent here in the south west!
Last night was the private view for our newest exhibition PHASE SHIFTER, a kinetic visual and auditory experience created by Squidsoup – currently on display in the Factory Cooperage (which already boasts a sizeable mural from south west public art collective LOCI). The piece was commissioned by Real Ideas, in partnership with the Illuminate Light Festival and Urban Splash.
The artwork is described as immersive for a reason – yes the artwork is beautiful to look at, but each bulb in the series emits its own sound, and each light responds to one another, there’s a constant conversation between light and sound that changes the energy of the space continually. Sometimes it’s curious and delightful, sometimes it’s charged and magnetic, and sometimes it’s just simply quite relaxing. All in all, the artwork is something you really need to go and experience for yourself.
As part of the PHASE SHIFTER programme, Real Ideas are hosting four Ocean Studios LIVE x events, Friday 21st Andy Quick will be making his post-locking debut, with Rue bringing her talents to Saturday 22nd. The next music sessions will be Friday 4th and Saturday 5th of June, Friday night is a DJ set and all-round good vibes with Jack Harman and Saturday evening Alex Hart will be bringing her guitar and lyrical finesse to the Real Ideas Café and Gallery space.
We’re still lining up catering for the events but expect delicious food by local suppliers using responsibly sourced ingredients – our dedication to supporting the best of the south west and bringing it to the yard goes down to every last detail!
In addition to the Ocean Studios Live x events, we also have pop-up markets, open studios, workshops, community art groups, yoga sessions, webinars and so much more. Come for a coffee, stay for the culture; or join as a member to become part of our network. There is so much to discover, get involved!
Ocean Studios Live x tickets are £10 / 30 minute slot for just the artwork is free.
